What is DSL?

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is an internet connection that is always-on and runs over your phone line, but because it uses higher frequencies than voice or fax it does not interfere with those signals. When you compare DSL to dial-up service, it is billed monthly, at fixed rates so that you can either use it once a day, or leave it on all day, your bill is always the same. Dial-up services are usually billed monthly, but there is a limit to the amount of total time you can spend online, even with the unlimited INTERNET ACCESS plans.

When you get your DSL line, you surf the entire internet the same way as you did from a regular dial-up modem except you can use it 24 hours a day, with no connection delay and without a busy signal or any connection/disconnection process.
The key advantage of DSL over dial-up is speed. DSL can be as high as 50 times faster than dial-up, depending on your location and quality of the phone lines involved. Speeds of up to 3 MBPS download speed can be reached, and it is often much cheaper than cable broadband. If you compare a complex web page that could take up to a minute to finish loading over dial-up, it can appear in just SECONDS over DSL.

Connection speed, reliability, and the "always-on" nature of DSL, are the main reasons it is so popular. For small businesses, DSL is also a great way to save money compared to pay per minute ISDN service, or some higher priced T1 lines.
Note: DSL availability is dependant on your location in relation to your local phone company. If DSL is not available yet in your area, feel free to check out such alternates as cable, satellite, or high speed dial-up.

What if I can't get DSL service?

Sometimes DSL service may not be available in certain areas, simply because of distance, the local phone company (you may want to call them to see when it may be available), or phone line conditions. Price should no longer be a factor though with current rates making high speed broadband internet access affordable for just about everyone.
